Vistnes Rock Carvings
Vistnes Rock Carvings submitted by kenntha88 : The largest elk figure! (Vote or comment on this photo)
Carving in Tjøtta

The rock carving site of Vistnes is three large pieces of cliffs located inside a small forest, overlooking the sea.
There is one large site and two smaller cliffs, on the largest is the biggest concentration of carvings.
The carvings are pictures of reindeer, elk, small whales, some strange geometrical patters, fishes, two human figures and some strange footsole carvings, and some that looks like leaves. There is also one large strange carving of a square with stripes, what this is picturing is very hard to understand. I shall make it up to the photos to show.
The pictures have been made very close to each other, and some are interlocking or overlapping each other. The lines have been deeply carved into the soft white rock. The site have been dated back to the stone age, about 4000-3000BC.
The site is inside a forest with leaf trees, a path have been made from the country road and leads down to the carvings.

Vistnes Rock Carvings submitted by kenntha88 : A beautiful carved elk or reindeer in the middle, a strange leaf-like carving above it. Some theories say it could be picturing the female genitalia, maybe a fertility symbol? Or maybe some other meaning?

Vistnes Rock Carvings
Vistnes Rock Carvings submitted by kenntha88 : Another smaller geometrical carving in the middle of the picture, looks like the same type as the larger one.

Vistnes Rock Carvings submitted by kenntha88 : One of the strange geometrical carvings. Any ideas of what this is meant to symbolize?

Vistnes Rock Carvings
Vistnes Rock Carvings submitted by kenntha88 : The third panel. Ignore the scribble made by people in later years!

Vistnes Rock Carvings
Vistnes Rock Carvings submitted by kenntha88 : This is the second largest of the panels.

Vistnes Rock Carvings
Vistnes Rock Carvings submitted by kenntha88 : This is the largest of the panels. The concentration of carvings are tightest here.
