Previous exhibition: What did a woman look like and how did she dress in the Neolithic Age? This question is answered by the Museum Quintana in Künzing (Bavaria, Germany) with a new reconstruction of the face of a woman who was buried 7000 years ago. She has a slim face, dark eyes and hair stuck in a bun, and died at the age of about 50 at what is now Deggendorf. She wore a leather band decorated with snail shells around her head. Now her bust as well as the original bones are on display. [and a preview of the skeleton visible on our page]
Based on modern technology, like it is also used in criminology, a computer tomography of the skull was made at the Klinikum Passau and then a 3D print was carried out based on the data. Afterwards, the team modeled skin, muscles and tissues.
Gene and isotope studies have revealed that the ancestors of the woman stem from Anatolia and had immigrated via the Balkan Peninsula, but she herself had grown up at Niederpöring. Eye color and complexion were also determined via genetics. However, there were no indications for the hairstyle. The hair - real hair was transplanted - was pushed up with a comb, because this was found to be the case in several burials of this time.
The special feature of the Neolithic find was the partially preserved headdress that the woman wore in her grave. It consists of a leather band with snail shells. 207 of the once around 400 pieces of the now rare Danube dwarf snail were still visible on the head. The jewelry indicates that the woman had a high social status.
