Located on three north-east to south-west oriented natural plateaus with different heights with the steepest sides to the south-east and north-west. There is a footpath leading from a local road and a car park with an information poster at the river up to the hillfort but the walk is long and goes up several steep hills. It is probably the longest walk I have had to get up to any hillfort!

A largely continuous wall meanders along the landscape along 3 of the plateau's edges, from the tip of the plateau towards the north. The NW slope is inaccessible by nature. Mostly built of quarry stone of various sizes and shapes, quite a few larger blocks. Ordinary drywall without binder. The size and shape of the wall varies considerably. In the N-NE part, where access to the castle is probably easiest, the wall is of considerable size and width. This part may have formed a kind of inner core. A smaller, much less visible and overgrown transverse wall is located here within the outer wall, oriented NNW, SSW.

The south west part of the wall is much thinner, lower and narrower. Large amounts of stone material has probably fallen down over the slope over time. Remains of smaller protruding walls are also to be found in the south side. Straight South of the plateaus highest point, there is an opening in the wall of approx. 10 m wide. The wall follows the edge of the plateau very carefully and it is built into the terrain, making good use of small rocky outcrops and edges. Smaller transverse canyons in the terrain that provide easy passage up to the plateau are blocked by particularly large concentrations of stone material. Up to 6-7 m thick, where the wall crosses the ravines. The main entrance is probably a ENE-SSW oriented evenly sloping gorge in the terrain NE of the trigonometric point. Blocked by very thick and high walls, several layers wide.

Total length of the wall is Approx 410 m, Largest with 7 m, average width approx. 2.5-3.5 m. Minimum width 0.6 m, height 0.3-1 m.
The vegetation is mostly bottom vegetation moss, heather, grass, small shrubs and scrub. Often the bottom vegetation completely covers the brick remains, in some places the stone masses lie uncovered by vegetation. Parts of the wall are overgrown by smaller trees, large shrubs and scattered firs. Very few places the individual stones are visible. From the top there is a beautiful view over the Verdalen valley.

Note: See lower down our page for a fun 3D reconstruction video of how this hillfort might have looked

Kjell-Amund Prestmo made a very good youtube virtual video of how the Steinsvettan hillfort might have looked like:
