Rock-cut-tombs in Kyūshū

Rock-cut-tombs (= artificial cave burial) dug on the hill in sugarcane field. This necropolis was used as the communal graveyard until 1960’s. “Tofuru ( < tōru)” means ‘go through’, “Baka ( < haka)” means ‘tomb’ thus “Tofuru-baka” is ‘burial cave connected to Hades’
