Like “Ichitarai” in Yonaguni-jima island 500km away, here on Aguni-jima island the islander placed stone tubs called “Tūji” for rain water storage, which is precious on the solitary island, and other purposes.
There seem to be hundreds of Tūji on the island, and they are classified by size, shape and purpose : smaller (60cm diam. approx.) round ones called “Usu-tūji”, ‘usu’ means sea water which is used for tofu (soy cake) manufacturing ; larger (100cm diam. approx.) round ones “T ūji” for rain water storage ; small (33×45㎝ approx.) rectangular ones “Tōni” for pig feeding ; larger (50×80㎝ approx.) rectangular ones “Nmuarē -tōni” used for potato washing ; rare greatest (85×150㎝ approx.) rectangle ones remonstrate the wealth of the owner.
The resource of “Tūji” is soft tuff stone were mined from the western shore of the island but the manufacturing has interrupted for 100 years.
