Mural decorated passage grave and observatory near Pyongyang. A ruined ancient observatory known as a chomsongdae (sometimes spelt cheomseongdae and meaning "star gazing platform") together with a mural decorated passage tomb have been found by a team of archaeologists from Kim Il Sung University.
The site is located to the west of the remains of the Anhak Royal Palace at the foot of Mt Taesong which is 10 kilometres north east of Pyongyang.
The tomb comprises a 3.05 metre passage leading to a square stone chamber 3.1 metres by 3.0 metres and 1.6 metres high. Inside the chamber there is a very faded mural although it is still possible to recognise green lotus designs and black water droplet patterns in it. Finds include axe blade shaped arrow heads, an iron nail and dark grey pot sherds.
The associated observatory (chomsongdae) would have been used for astronomical observations and associated astrological functions, the two mutually intertwined at that time. It has a quadrilateral shape some 7.5 metres by 6.7 metres surrounded by a demarcated heptangular area. Similar observatories have been found in other parts of the Korean Peninsula, those have been dated to the 7th century AD, around the time of the Silla Kingdom.
The twin site is located near the Taesongsan Funfair, the Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery and Kim Il Sung Memorial Palace on the slopes of Mt Taesong (meaning Big Fort). Unsurprisingly it has the remains of a fort dating from 427 AD on its 272 meter high peak . Nearby is the site of the Kwangbop Temple which originates from 392. In 1953 bombs destroyed the temple and in 1982-90 it was rebuilt.
