Ancient Village or Settlement in Nordland

This huge flat marshy area is the site of a larger Iron Age settlement site. It can be a little disappointing to observe as many of the artifacts can be very hard to see even if the terrain is flat and it is only smaller vegetation.

Parts of this extensive area was excavated in earlier years, the ground under the vegetation mostly consists of sand and is easy to dig out. In total it was located over 30 smaller burial cairns, five remains of housings, four remains of boat houses and a large number of charcoal pits called cooking-pits.

The barrow cairns vary in size from 3 to 12 metres in diameter and from almost flat to 1,5 metres in height. I was able to recognize only one of the burial cairns. It is very difficult to distinguish the smaller cairns since they are very low and it is several other overgrown hills and humps that some could be normal sand hills.

The housing remains vary from 7 to 12 metres in length and from 3-5 metres wide. I was able to find one of the largest housings, the elongated depression with the long mounds marking the walls of the housing are around 10 metres in length and the depression is clearly marked.

I was not able to find any other of the ancient artifacts. There are other depressions and small hills that could be ancient artifacts, but they are very hard to distinguish. The area itself is in a beautiful mountain and sea landscape and is well worth the visit only because of the nature surrounding the site.
