Other Natural Feature in Bohemia

Some places simply do have a genius loci. One such place can be found in the park of the superb empire style chateau Kynžvart...summer residence of the Habsburg chancellor Metternich. Small forested hill above the manor called Májový vršek (translatede as a May Top), used to be according local tradition pagan sacrifice place.

In the end of the 17th century already, a small chapel was built there. Even a hermit was settled nearby, probably to prevent local people from pagan rituals. Existing outdoor wooden chapel is from the 19st and perfectly fits to natural surroundings.

Large stony amphiteathre dominates to the place, like a huge stone circle, interrupted by the building of the chapel. But the chaple itself seems to be respecting basic orientation of the allegedly prehistoric sanctum. There is also central boulder, halved almost exactly along the axis of the chapel. I was not surprised at all when I found tipical oval depressions, sometimes called "sacrificial bowls" on the tops of some boulders.

The fact is that the whole place has a special and mysterious atmosphere. An absolutely amazing combination of an ancient sacred place with today's sanctuary.. ..
