Rome. Colosseum
Rome. Colosseum submitted by KenWilliams : No matter how many times you try it, the Italians still have us all beat at the 'painting with light' game! The Colosseum in Christmas Tree mode. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The capital of the ancient Roman Republic and Empire. According to legend, and Virgil's Aeneid, defeated refugees came to Latium in around 1200 BCE to settle. Their descendants, the brothers Romulus and Remus moved on towards the Hills of Rome. After a fight, the survivor Romulus founded Rome around 750 BCE. Later other settlements on the surrounding hills were absorbed into the city.

The Etruscans furnished some of the later kings of Rome, but after Tarquinus made himself unpopular, the monarchy was abolished and Rome was a republic until the murder of Julius Caesar in 44 BCE.

Augustus was the first of a long Line of emperors, which only ended with the invasion of the Visigoths in the 5th Century.

Not much of Republican Rome remains other than small temples in the Area Sacra, formerly in the Campus Martius district, but the columns and brick walls of ancient monuments abound in the modern Italian capital.
