Kleinen Kreuzsteine
Kleinen Kreuzsteine submitted by ladrin : So called Kleinen Kreuzsteine (Vote or comment on this photo)
A cute pair of smaller standing stones, located next to the forest trail north west of the town of Schönwald in Bavaria. Both stones seems to be just a fragments of larger ones. While the right one is an original, the stone with the clear engraving of the cross inside the circle is a copy. with the original in the Fichtelgebirgsmuseum. The location of the stones should be authentic. They are made of phyllite rock and are about 80cm tall.

The original purpose is not entirely clear. Because of its location they could be old milestones or landmarks. And they could also be medieval propitiatory crosses. An unconfirmed legend is associated to these monuments. According this tale one of the stones should designates burial places of two boys from the nearby mill who killed each other while fighting for a girl.

Grammar of the current site name is incorrect. The crosses in fact are called "Kleine Kreuzsteine".
More info also about the 2 crosses and others in the proximity (in German): http://www.kreuzstein.eu/html/body_schoenwaldof.html
