Karl Gustav Stenen
Karl Gustav Stenen submitted by praeceptor : Site in København Denmark Allegedly King Karl Gustav of Sweden prepared and tried to in vain to cleave this tiny stone. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone (Menhir) in København

The Karl Gustav Stone at Stændertorv, Roskilde

About this small stone at Stændertorvet in Roskilde, it is said that when the Swedish King Karl Gustav had invaded Denmark and in 1658/1659 would attack Copenhagen from the behind, he gathered his men here at Roskilde, where he assured them that it would be just as easy for him to split Denmark and conquer Copenhagen as it would be for him to split the small stone he had chosen for the purpose. The king undertook his work before the eyes of all his men. But it would not work for the King for what reason he eventually gave up his demonstration, so this stone to this day still stands uncleaved at Stændertorvet in Roskilde near our world treasure, the Roskilde Cathedral.

Similarly, to giving up his attemt to cleave the small stone, Karl Gustav also had to give up splitting Denmark and conquering Copenhagen.

The medium size stone among the flowers is not the Karl Gustav stone. This stone is said to bear scrape marks from the nails of Satan. When Satan visited Roskilde the bells of the cathedral suddenly began to sound, and since Satan can't stand the sound of church bells he fled but stumpled over some stones. In another version of the story the scrape marks came from the nails of Satans Granny. To get just a little bit of Karl Gustav stone to see, the vision must be panned left. Still the most part of this tiny Karl Gustav Stone is hidden by the flowers growing there. I just discovered that both stones are mentioned here: http://www.denkreativeand.dk/index.php?m=08&y=06&entry=entry060802-062210
