Rock Cut Tomb in Lazio/Roma

Etruscan tombs north of Rome. The necropolis lies in a bed of Volcanic Tuffa out of which the tombs were cut between the 8th and 5th Century BC. The earliest tombs resembled mills, while the later resemble tumuli or mushrooms. The style is somewhat oriental and probably harkens back to the Asia Minor origins of the Etruscans. The site has hundreds of tombs, of which at least 5 are rather large, stretched out over about 1 Km towards the town.

Cerveteri Necropoli della Banditaceia submitted by AlexHunger : Site in Lazio Italy. Map of the main Cerveteri necropolis which extends ove at least 1 Km. The tail end on the left of the entrance has smaller less impressive tombs. Others below the main east west line are not made accessible and look very overgrown. Most have already been robed in antiquity

Cerveteri Necropoli della Banditaceia submitted by AlexHunger : Site in Cerveteri, Lazio: Tomba dei Rilievi. There was at least one intact tomb, which was underground without a tumulus. There is a glass door at the entrance to protect the decorations and paintwork, which however distorts photos.

Cerveteri Necropoli della Banditaceia submitted by AlexHunger : Site in Cerveteri, Lazio: via dei Monti Cereti. The Etruscan also evolved a sense of town planning in arranging 2 "streets" of tombs, as oposed to the usual tumuli. These street type of tombs then also found their way into Highgate cemetarry much later when Egypt was all the rage in Victorian London.
