Above the Bishop's town of Bressanone in Italy in the vicinity of the small village of Elvas is one of the most important areas of Schalenstein in South Tyrol. The so-called Bildstein is certainly one of the most impressive of these rocks described with petroglyphs. We counted a total of 463 petroglyphs, in South Tyrol this number is only surpassed by the Wasserstein in Feldthurns.
In addition, there are also other markings, small bowls with concentric circles, at least one cross and many signs that are difficult to interpret. Even an image of a ship could be seen here in one of the signs. Countless channels run over the bevelled rock, connecting many of the small bowls with each other and creating an impressive picture. It is also clearly recognizable from a smooth, shiny trace that it was used as a slide stone, making it one of the 30 or so fertility slides that we know of in South Tyrol.
Without a doubt, the Bildstein is one of the central bowl stones in the Brixen area and definitely one of the most impressive in South Tyrol.
