Longmen Caves
Longmen Caves submitted by DrewParsons : Longmen Buddhist Caves near the city of Luoyang in Henan province. Carved between 500 and 700 CE but subjected to Red Guard vandalism in the 1960's and before that in the 19th century western souvenir hunters and museum collectors who cut heads off with saws, sometimes taking whole murals. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Longmen Caves are a series of rock cut caves containing Buddhist carvings, the earliest dating from 492 AD. There are over 100,000 Buddhist carvings located in the various caves and alcoves near Luoyang, Henan province, China.

The caves are set along the banks of the Yi River 12 kilometres from the centre of Luoyang City and include over one hundred thousand carvings in over 2500 caves and alcoves. Many of the carvings have been damaged by Red Guard actions during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960's or by westerners in the 19th century when statues were cut from their bases and taken as souvenirs. However, there are many carvings still in good condition and some enormous ones which are largely intact. Fortunately the site is now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
