The hillfort at Høgkleiva has one of the most beautiful and impressive views of any hillfort I have visitedFrom the top there is a wonderful view over the Gudbrandsdalen valley and the Lågen river! The top of Høgkleiva is a rocky forest covered hilltop or rock outcrop on the east side of the Gudbrandsdalen valley and is 406 metres above sea level making this the highest hillfort I have visited.
The view is only maybe rivalled by the hillfort at Litlstenen in South Trøndelag. To get to the hilltop there is a local country road going up the valley side and ends at a viewpoint lower down. This point where the footpath starts is actually a 17th century execution spot and there are several information posters here. The footpath to the top is part of the "pilgrims path" which is a series of hiking trails following the medieval hiking trail the pilgrims probably used from 1000 to 1600s. It is still in use today.
The hillfort is located on two rocky terraces. To the west the hill is going very steep down to the valley in a series of almost vertical cliffs. There were probably no use for walls on this side! The wall on the lower terrace starts with a steep cliff and runs along the less steep cliff edge from north to south for around 30 metres before turning sharply and oriented east to west for around 20 metres. This wall is probably the "outer" wall of the hillfort. It is hard to get a good measure of the wall, the visible part is overgrown with moss and vegetation with only a few rocks visible. Some parts of it has fallen further down the hill over the years.
On the northern and highest top is another wall going east to west in a line closing off the northern entrance to the hillfort. It is around 30 metres in length and also this part is difficult to get any details of the wall. There is a small visible entrance in this wall on the north east part of the fort.
The footpath up to the hillfort is clearly marked and information posters are found both at the nearby parking lot where the path starts and just under the hillfort. There are also some modern sculptures along the path as part of some art project. The walk up to the hillfort and a visit here is highly recommended!
