Natural Stone / Glacial Erratic in Bavaria
Do not take the title too seriously, we only nicknamed the stone UFO, because of its shape and the carved holes in it looking like the oval windows or hatches of a cosmic ship.
The explanation of a UFO-Monument might be exciting to some specialists, but there are common and less spectacular explanations: It could have been a Celtic sacrificial stone, the holes used as cases for corn.
The forest around the stone shows very interesting features such as dead-ice holes (round ponds filled with water, left back by a glacier of the last ice age). Some ponds are connected by a system of artificial ditches, which could be interpreted as water systems from very different ages.
The site could have well been a home to human beings in the stoneage, too. Many places for animals to drink and rich forests around could have been ideal for hunting.
The stone was undivided not very long ago, the lower half sticking in the ground so that the shape of an upside-down saucer with windows in it was more obvious.
Some people became curious and dug a big hole around and even partly under the stone.
As a result it broke into two parts. But there are eye-witnesses who saw it in the original form.
Egmating is 21 km SE of Munich. If you follow the road to Lindach up the hills, after 1 km a small straight forest footpath called "Bernrieder Weg" (on the right) will lead you directly to the stone (a walk of one more km).
