Hallerstein submitted by ladrin : Square-shaped granite block with the distinctive carving of a Latin cross. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone (Menhir) in Bavaria. Square-shaped piece of granite about 80 cm in height irregularly cut at the apex. A large carving of a Latin cross with the arms leading almost to the respective ends of the block.

This stone has always been popularly known as the“ trumpeter" stone. This peculiar name is derived as follows. Two soldier trumpeters were said to be killed there in 1625 during the Thirty Years' War. One of them allegedly fought in the Battle of White Mountain near the Prague in 1620. So the legend says.

Hallerstein is also mentioned in the official record from 1681. Local "judge and forester Johann Lipharth, who worked as a dowser on behalf of the government, found a silver vein under the trumpeter stone heading eastwards". An interesting fact.

This ancient monument can be found by the old country road in the in the Hallersteiner Wood, about 100 m west of the road junction. Its location is about 2.2 km southeast of Förmitz, almost exactly on the border of the (old) districts of Münchberg and Wunsiedel. By the way the road itself is said to be very old. It is possible that it was an important "highway" even already in Frankish Carolingian Empire.
