Barrow Cemetery in Bohuslän

Pilane Gravfält is an Iron Age burial ground with seven stone circles, six standing stones, ten mounds and 57 low circular stone settings. It is a unique site in that it combines a modern art display of installation art with prehistoric remains!! When the car park for the area was being built they uncovered evidence of settlement here going back 8000 years to when the coastline was closer to Pilane (land levels have risen faster than sea levels in Scandinavia due to the weight of the ice age glaciers being eliminated as they melted allowing the land to bounce back faster than sea levels rose). Excavations have shown that many graves were used for several burials with new urns filled with cremated remains deposited over long periods of time. The site is reached by taking the highway towards Kyrkesund and just past Klövedal turning south to reach the large car park for the site. A footpath wends its way north west to the gravfält some 200 metres from the car park. Along the way you will see some very unusual exhibits - a giant white rabbit (seen in the distance in one of my photos), an installation art work of a mannequin walking a tight rope across the valley, and two crocodiles beneath a tree!! Amazing!! References: Riksantikvarieämbetet Fornsök: Klövedal 105:1
