The site at Helge is one of the most interesting sites I have seen so far. It is basically a burial cemetery from the early Iron age, but what makes it so interesting is, that it contains several different objects and typea of burials.
This site has so many different types of objects, that I picked the item that is easiest to recognize as the type of site.
These are two very tall standing stones. One of them has a height of over 6 metres, and is about 50cm wide. The other is about 5 to 5,5 metres tall and a little wider than the first one. There is also a third standing stone, shaped as a standing slab, about 2 metres tall and 1 meter wide.
Close to the standing stones is a large stone circle, made of 9 large boulders, about 15 metres in diameter, and with a larger rock in the middle. Probably also a burial marker, but maybe it had another purpose?
There are also four large burial mounds, three of them are about 30 meters in diameter and about 3-4 metres in height. They are overgrown with grass but no large trees, making them easily visible. The largest one is called "Helgeshaugen", named after the site. The second largest one is called "Ormshaugen", meaning Orm`s mound. Orm is a common male first name from the Iron age. This mound is the only one that has not been cleared of forest and brush, so it can be hard to see. The last two large burial mounds are about 20 metres wide and about 2-3 metres tall. There is also a unknown number of smaller mounds spread around or close by the larger mounds.
There are also parts of a short stone fence leading from the two large mounds and pointing towards Ormshaugen in the east. The ancient fence is almost overgrown with moss and grass and can hardly be seen.
The site has 3 parts: 1) Helgeshaugen, another of the large mounds, the two tallest standing stones and the stone ring are located at the main part of the cemetery, 2) Ormshaugen is about 30 metres to the east between some private houses and 3) one large and several smaller mounds and the shortest standing stone are located to the east of the main part.
In the iron age the sea reached as far as almost to this point, and Helge has probably been a small ridge between the sea and the lake.
Burials of this kind should suggest that Helge and the area around have had a important and wealthy settlement in the iron age.
The site is easy to find, it can be driven to, and signposts mark the site, a sign is also placed on the main highway. It is well-worth a visit.
