Tingvoll Stone Setting
Tingvoll Stone Setting submitted by kenntha88 : The stone setting seen from the west opening. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This site is a big stone setting also called a "ship-setting" in Norway. It is a burial monument from the viking/iron age. It responds to a stone circle in some ways, but is in fact a burial.

These type of burials are called "ship-settings" because it is believed the meaning was to resemble a ship. The placement of the stones, like a huge oval with pointed ends looks like the outline of a ship.

This stone setting has originally been over 40 metres in length, and consisting of 45 stones, but some stones at the ends of the setting have been removed in later years so today, the length is about 35 metres and consisting of 38 standing stones. The tallest stones is in the middle of the two lines of stones. The stones vary from about 50cm to about 1,5 metres in height.

This area has originally contained over 20 burials, several forms of burials like barrows, standing stones, 2 other stone settings, and also cairns and elongated mounds. Sadly today this one setting is all that remains. A road called "old kings road" that goes from the east to the west runs trough this old cemetery. It is a typical location of ancient cemeteries to place them on both sides of a main road. This site is close to the Egge farm and several other ancient sites, so this make it probably that this area have had a important and big population in the iron age.

The setting is located inside the small village Steinkjer, in the very pretty garden of the Tingvoll hotel, and the grass around and inside the setting have been neatly cut down. Some trees surround the site.
