Sparbu Barrows
Sparbu Barrows submitted by kenntha88 : When leaving the site I saw this enormous round hill in the grain field. Natural hill or a very large mound? (Vote or comment on this photo)
Barrow Cemetery in Nord-Trøndelag

High on a hilltop and with a beautiful view over Trondheimsfjord and just south of a elderly home is a small iron age barrow cemetery.

The cemetery contains at least 13 burial monuments, (6 round barrows, 4 elongated barrows and 3 uncertain.) All the barrows are close together in a group with the largest round barrow highest up on the hill and furthest to the south-east. The largest barrow is a beautiful monumental round barrow. It is 30 metres in diameter and around 5 metres in height and visible for a long distance away.

The second largest barrow is around 20 metres in diameter and around 4 metres high. It is just to the north west of the largest barrow. The rest of the round barrows are from 6 to 30 metres in diameter and from 0,5 to 5 metres in height. The elongated barrows are from 8 to 11 metres in length and from 6 to 8 metres wide.

The cemetery is heavily overgrown with large and smaller trees and the smaller burial monuments can be very difficult to see in the right vegetation. The largest barrows are easy to see even heavily overgrown. Photographing this site should probably be done in late autumn or winter when the trees have less leaves.
