Barrow Cemetery in Nord-Trøndelag. When I first read about this site in Kulturminnesøk there was limited information of this site, the burial monuments have never been studied or registered in detail but when I visited it turned up to be one of the most beautiful barrow cemeteries I have visited and certainly the biggest and most pleasant surprise in 2021
The site is located on a large elongated and forest covered hill oriented east to west with the Munkrøstad farm down the hill to the west. When I visited the site I cam from the east side and there is a footpath leading west to the site for around 300 metres. The site and hill is inside a wide fence and the hill is a grazing grounds for young bulls. When I visited the bulls were coming up to me very curious as to why I was visiting!
All the barrows are only covered with short grass and some spread out birch trees, making all the burials very easy to see in the terrain.
The site consists of 22 round barrows, 4 oval shaped barrows, two cairns, 3 long barrows and one possible long house remains and one possible stone setting.
Furthest to the west is a cluster of 5 smaller barrows, they are only 5-8 metres in diameter and very low in the terrain, only around 50cm high. Further down to the west it is a group of two oval shaped barrows, one large beautiful long barrow and one cairn with a deep crater in the top. In the middle is another group of barrows and two paralell long barrows. Furthest to the west is is two beautiful large round barrows and several smaller ones, and also 2 more long barrows.
No detailed information of the size of the barrows themselves were avialable in kulturminnesøk but the two largest barrows are around 22 metres in diameter and 2,5-3 metres in height. They have both very clear ditches around their edges. One of them have a ditch dug trough it but the other seems to be undamaged.
The long barrows are impressive in size and shape, one of them is around 30 metres in length, 5 metres wide and 1,5 metres in height. They are as the round barrows very easy to photograph and spot in the terrain. Most of the medium sized barrows are 10-15 metres in diameter and 1,5 to 2 metres in height. The cairn located in the middle of the site is around 20 metres wide and 2,5 metres in height. It has a deep crater in the middle. Most of the smaller barrows also have clear ditches around them.
I was not expecting to find such a beautiful barrow cemtery when I visited the site, the site is highly recommendable to visit!
