Runestone in Østfold
This runestone was described for the first time as late as 2018. The Øverby runestone once was located on a large forested hill not far from the Øverby farm. It was inside a old barrow cemetery that today have gotten lost. The stone was removed and taken down to the farm in 1905 and was for many years used in the stairs to the front door on the farm.
85 years later when the old house was taken down the stone was again moved and was for many years used as a bench outside the modern house. In 2016 a local man suspected it was runes on the stone and sendt a photo to the office for antiquities and official research could be done on the stone.
The stone is a large flat slab around 2 metres in length and 1,5 metres wide and 20-25cm thick. The runes runs along one of the sides of the slab and there are also a short inscription on the large side close to the edge. This inscription is on the side facing down when I visited the site. The stone has some damage due to beeing used as a step and from natural erotion.
It is unique since it has runes in the older futhark and the stone have been dated back to around 400AD. Very few runestones from this period are known from Norway.
The inscription was interpreted to mean: "Carved raske (skilled), Iril, runes for Isni"
The word Iril is found on several runestones from this period and is believed to be some sort of title, possibly runecarver.
