Cupstone Menhir Viggar Valley Tyrol
Cupstone Menhir Viggar Valley Tyrol submitted by Stonegps : Site in Austria (Vote or comment on this photo)
This Cupstone-Menhir is in good shape, it was originally standing about 50m higher on an old path to the south. Nearby is the biggest monolith in the Alps, "The Written Stone", weighing about 60 tonnes. This seems to have been an old Sun cult place with a nearby Abri (shelter), where archaeologists found Silex working tools and arrowheads.

Dating is difficult, but the oldest archaeological site nearby in the Fotschervalley was dated 12.500 BC. It is a classic alpine signpost translation you can read on the posted painting.
Foto was done by our partner Ing.Josef Höfer and translation by Herbert Kirnbauer.

Prehistoric Cupstones in Tyrol-Austria by Andy B on Monday, 05 July 2021

Thomas Walli-Knofler writes: In 2019, we, a 4-man team of interested amateur archaeologists, began our search for the mystical cupstones from the Neolithic Age. Starting in the immediate vicinity of Innsbruck, we soon found some beautiful and relatively well preserved specimens. A path structure soon crystallised from the sites, As the cupstones are conspicuously found, almost at regular intervals. This also facilitates the search for new ones, if one can thereby rediscover and follow the ancient paths.

After many hours of marching and metres of altitude, on foot and mostly with the e-bikes, we found over 40 pieces of these prehistoric alpine signposts, grave slabs, cult slabs and astronomical observation stones by the onset of winter 2020. Not only this, but also some previously unknown stone circles and cult sites, as well as the signpost menhirs regularly found along the old paths.

Thanks to the linguistic work of Prof. Dr. Knaur and the book "Stone Age Code - Die Schalensteinschrift" by our partner, Mr. Herbert Kirnbauer, it was possible to decipher the stone stones. This brought clarity to the function of these stones.

For this year we have to document about 80 new cup stones, most of the locations we could determine from old reports, maps, as well as from information we received. You can read a detailed preliminary report here under Reports. We hope to inspire you for our Stone Age heritage in Tyrol-Austria.
