Borobudur is considered the largest Buddhist temple in the world.
Situated in the central Indonesian island of Java, surrounded by
beautiful and cool volcanoes, Borobudur is a remarkable and beautiful
structure. While some say it is difficult to give an exact date to the
structure, some records say it could have been completed in the middle
of 9Th century.
Archaeologists suggest that construction of Borobudur temple could
have begun by 8Th century when King Samaratungs, of the Sailendra
dynasty probably of south Indian origin or Indo-China ruled Sumatra
and Java.
What is most unusual about the temple is its structure which unfolds
like a lotus flower. Erected on top of a hill, it has stepped up
pyramidal structure of six storeys with three circular terraces and a
central stupa. One storey has depiction of stories from Buddha’s life
from Jataka ales, one essential teachings on the idea of the universe,
and the journey of a human mind from a world covered with desire to
ultimate liberation from the physical and worldly desire. At the top
level are circles that have Buddha seated in meditative pose, counted
to be 92 in all.
