Standing Stone (Menhir) in Akershus

On the west side of the Gjoleidveien road is a modern monument made of king Olav Haraldsson and a battle with him and the people of Rauma. Right next to the modern monument on each side of it are two stones of ancient origin.

The stone to the right is flat, around 1 metre long and around 0,5 metres in height and around 0,4 metres in height. The flat surface on top are full of horizontal lines that has been carved into the stone. It is believed it has been used to sharpen arrows or swords.

The other stone to the left is the most interesting one. It is believed to be a phallic symbolic stone used for sacrificial rituals. It is around 0,8 metres in height, around 40cm wide and have a almost perfect cylindrical shape with a rounded top. Phallic stones occur all around Scandinavia. They are mostly connected to barrow cemeteries. Like this one is found close to the larger barrow cemetery at Sten-Tærud.
