Barrow Cemetery in Akershus

This barrow cemetery consists of 17 barrows. 3 are elongated barrows while the rest are all round barrows. The cemetery is located inside a pine tree forest, but the trees are not tightly together and on the forest floor are very little vegetation. The barrows however are in some places covered in tree roots, but they are easy to observe. The barrows are very tight together and only a few of them seems to have been disturbed. It is located next to a school and on the other side a small football field.

The largest barrows are around 14-15 metres in diameter and from 1 to 1,5 metres in height. Most of the middle sized barrows are from 10 to around 7 metres in diameter and from 0,7 to 1 metre in height and the smallest ones from 5 to 8 metres across and from 0,3 to 0,5 metres in height. Most of the barrows have clear ditches around the edges and it makes even the smallest barrows easy to see. The three elongated barrows are around 14 metres in length and 4 metres across.

In 1867, it was conducted investigations of 15 of the barrows, and it was then found a number of items - including horse equipment and brooches. The barrow cemetery is probably from the Iron Age (ca. 600-1030). In 1958 it was found a cremation burial here with heat-affected stones and burnt bones. This gives an indication that there are probably several flat-ground burials that has not yet been discovered.

A short footpath leads trough the cemetery.
