The first mention of the Rimsø rune stone goes back to Lauritz Schebye Vedel Simonsen (*1780 - †1858 - Danish historian). In October 1814, in a petition to the Antiquities Commission, he stated: "... that he had found a narrow slab in County Scheel, which was 3 cubits long and 1/4 thick and walled in the Rimsø church wall. The missing parts would probably still be sitting here and there in the wall, but could not be discovered. True runes can be read on the edge of the slab, but the bottom piece has been hewn away and patched with chalk, so that the meaning of the inscription is meaningless” (Today kept in: Antikvarisk - Topografisk Arkiv, National Museum Copenhagen).
In 1875 the huge stone was removed at the request of court hunter Benzon, which he had promised Rasmus Henrik Kruses when he visited. It was now laid outside the church until it was erected on the burial mound just south of the church in 1889.
When the church was built, the large stone was probably not brought from far away, which is probably why it originally stood at the foot of the hill.
Whether there is a connection between the rune stone and the burial mound can only be clarified by examining the mound, but this has (still) not been done.
The rune stone is dated to the period around 900-1020. The stone has the following measures: height 226 centimeters, width 120 centimeters, depth 12-26 centimeters
