In a part of the Palazzo Ducale, on Piazza Castello, just off the Piazza Sordello in the lovely ancient city of Mantova, is a branch of the Italian Museo Archeologico Nazionale.

It is either very new, or very recently renovated, and when I visited in July 2007 had just one room open with exhibits, and nothing in the way of guides etc - but it was free entry.

There are exhibits of items found in the historic Mantova region, from prehistoric times, through the neolithic lake dwelling people up until the Romans left. On display there are ancient stone tools, through beautiful bronze Etruscan items to Roman ceramics and marbles.

There are also some very interesting photographic records of local excavations, including some prehistoric graveyards. As a centrepiece of the museum room, there is a reconstruction of one of these ancient graves, within which will be put the renowned 5000 year old couple of embracing skeletons, found buried together on Valentines day this year. They will be moved to the museum in due time. The original Romeo and Juliet?
