Round Barrow(s) in Akershus

Rishaugen is a beautiful round barrow located just next to the Drøbakveien road. Along the road have been several large barrows but sadly many of them have been lost over the years due to farming and road construction.

The barrow is 28 metres in diameter and 6 metres in height. It is covered by grass and some larger leaf trees. A ditch has been dug into the barrow from the west and ends in the centre. But even with the ditch the barrow is still a beautiful sight!

The name Rishaugen comes from the word "Rise" which means "Troll". It has probably come from a local tale which is is connected to the barrow:

In Rishaugen lived the beautiful Herlaug with their parents. She fell in love with a local boy Åsulf, but he was a human and she was a "Hulder" which is a sort of nymph. During the midsummer feast the two met and Herlaug song:

Every midsummer and July we are feasting,
then rejoice our volatile Spirit the best.
We rejoice in the Sun and stars shine,
Oh dear, some just your soul!

But Åsulf rejected her and said, "You can not have much to rejoice at? You are all just trolls! "Herlaug was the screaming and wailing and carried into the barrow, where she died in the hands of her parents. The barrow closed, and has never been opened since.
