Round Barrow(s) in Buskerud
The Hallvardshaugene barrows are two huge and beautiful round barrows at the old farm at Huseby. The two barrows are among the prettiest iron age burial monuments in Buskerud county. They are both located inside the area of the main buildings of the old farm and one is in the garden of the farm villa.
There are two huge round barrows, each with a standing stone on top, one a medieval tombstone and the other a modern standing stone. The barrows are simply called north and south barrow. They are covered only with short grass and some larger trees.
The North barrow is 30 metres in diameter and 5 metres in height. It is covered only with short garden lawn grass and one beautiful large oak tree at the top. On top of the barrow next to the tree base is a modern age standing stone. It is around 1,7 metres in height and around 85cm wide, the top ends in a point. I could not find any information of when it was placed here. This barrow is called "Hallvardshaugen" after Hallvard Vebjørnsson of Husaby.
The south barrow is slightly larger than the north barrow. It is 35 metres in diameter and 5 metres in height. It is covered only with lawn grass and is easy to photograph. A small potato storage is located in the south east corner but does not have any big disturbance on the barrow. On top of this barrow is a copy of the Husaby stone (the original is at a museum). The original stone is a tombstone from the 1300s. It has a picture of the virgin mary and a inscription in latin: "Ave Maria, here lies Ragnhild, Siras daughter".
A third barrow once located close to these two barrows was removed in the 1800s and the keel of a ship was found in the barrow. The barrows have been dated to around 900AD.
