Barrow Cemetery in Vestfold, Norway

This barrow cemetery was originally larger but some parts of it have been destroyed in later years because of farming and housebuilding. The barrow settlement today is divided in three parts at the edges and top of a large highland terrace overlooking the agricultural landscape and the town Sande to the west.

The first part of the cemetery on the south part of the ridge is heavily overgrown with small and larger trees and the barrows can be difficult to see. This part consists of four barrows with the diameter 18, 10, 12 and 10 metres and with a height of 3,5 to 1 metres. The largest barrow is 18 metres in diameter and 3,5 metres in height.

The part of the cemetery at the north east part of the ridge is also heavily overgrown and is located in a small forest between some houses. It consists of three barrows with the diameter 15, 10 and 6 metres. It is very difficult to see because of the forest vegeation.

The best visible part of the cemetery is to the north east and is located in and around the farm called Duni. It consists of only two barrows but the largest barrow is 20 metres in diameter and 4 metres in height. A small road goes around its edges making it easy to see but a small outhouse have been buildt at the centre of the barrow. The other barrow is 11 metres in diameter and 1,75 metres in height.

Druid's Well (Dunino)
Druid's Well (Dunino) submitted by KiwiBetsy : Folklore tells of Druid priests making human sacrifices to appease the gods. Whatever has or has not happened here in the past, today it is a beautiful place to step back from the madding crowd and let your spirit roam. (1 comment)

Druid's Well (Dunino)

Druid's Well (Dunino) submitted by KiwiBetsy : 20 metres further around the cliff you will find (if you look hard), a large ringed cross about 3 metres tall and 1.5 metres wide. Coins have been pushed into many crevices in the rock in the vicinity of this cross.

Druid's Well (Dunino)
Druid's Well (Dunino) submitted by KiwiBetsy : Beside the well is the impression of a footprint. This is a place of ancient worship and the footprint may link it with ceremonies of inauguration of kings as at Dunadd, Kilmartin in Argyll.

Dunino Den
Dunino Den submitted by hamish : This stone is in Dunino Kirk Yard. It has carvings on it but are difficult to see. Folk leave monetary offerings on the top.
