Chambered Tomb near Trondheim in Norway
This is one of the most interesting sites I have visited so far. It is called The chieftain's grave by locals.
This is actually a rare burial type in Norway. Inside a burial mound an entrance leads through a small corridor into a burial chamber. These type of burials are not very common in Norway. The entrance has been blocked in recent times in fear of the mound collapsing, so its no longer possible to enter the tomb itself.
The chamber was excavated and it was found to contain the bodies of two persons, a male and a female, they were put on bear pelts on top of two benches on each side of the burial chamber. Also other grave goods like weapons, jewelry, a belt piece, brooches, pearls and lots of other artifacts were found, suggesting the couple (possibly man and wife) was very wealthy in life. The burial is dated to the early iron age, about 400 AD.
The mound is about 20 metres across and about 2 metres tall. A very pretty standing stone is situated on top of the mound, it is about 2 metres tall and about 60cm wide.
The name of the location, "Horg" is interesting in itself, a "horg" was a word for a place of worship and cult activity from the ancient pagan times. The same as the word "Hov". Maybe people came from far away to worship the gods in this area?
The tomb is beautifully located far up in a valley side overlooking the Meldalen valley and the river Gaula far below. Maybe it once was a settlement in these hills. Far up in the hills for protection maybe? Considering the time period of the burial.
There is a marked path leading up from the valley to the hills above, it is a steep climb, so it is a heavy walk if you are in such a bad physical shape as me.
