Rock Art in Buskerud

In the middle of the town Drammen is a rock art site from the stone age. It is located in a residential neighbourhood and made possible for visitors to observe. A fence has been put up around the rock art panel and a roof has been built over it to protect it from the elements.

The site consists of 46 different figures, but only 7 of them have been made possible to view for visitors. The figures are one very stylized animal, it has a huge square shaped body and a very long neck with a unusual small head, four legs and a tail. It also have a circle with a line through it. It is believed this is figuring the heart of the animal. It is difficult to make out if it figures a moose or reindeer. The body is around 60X40cm big.

Two more figures are clearly fish figures. They are around 50cm long and around 20cm wide. They have clear lines inside them clearly symbolizing the skeleton.

The clearest figure is a huge whale figure with fins on both sides. it is around 2,4metres long and around 60cm wide. The inside of the body is carved in a mosaic pattern. There are also 3 more smaller animal figures believed to symbolize elk or reindeer. They are around 20cm long and are the least visible on the site. All figures have been painted with red paint.

The rock art site is believed to be from around 2000 to 4000BC based on the height from the sea level.

Skogerveien submitted by kenntha88 : This stylized animal figure is strange compared to other stone age animal carvings. Maybe someone has an idea what animal it could be?
