This is one of the four large barrow cemeteries that is believed to be connected to the extensive settlement of Skiringssal Kaupang area. The Kaupang settlement is further to the west across the river, I have choosed to divide them into three sites because of the distance between them.
At Kaupang there are various burial sites, assumed to have been consisted of approximatel 1000 graves. There were four large burial sites around the town in addition to scattered graves. The large site with at least 120 barrows was situated to the north of the town. Here at Lamøya there were also barrows. In the excavations in between 1950-57, around 80-90 graves were revealed.
Most of the barrows at Lamøya are small, between 3-10 metres in dimameter, and several are flat-ground burials with no markings on the surface. They majority were buried in boats that were between 4-12 metres long. The burial area at Kaupang indicates cultural contacts with Southern Scandinavia and Western and Central Europe. The size of the burial site and the findings in the graves indicate that that population at Kaupang was significant and made up of people with varying origins and social backgrounds.
The Lamøya cemetery has no visible mounds today, but they have been made possible to see for tourists because the stone coffins, burial chambers and boat-shaped markings are visible above ground today.
