Barrow Cemetery in Vestfold

Bergshaugen is a very pretty iron age burial cemetery located on a grassy, partially forest covered natural hilltop just south of the Re school. The cemetery is just south of the main school building and is marked with information posters. The cemetery is on the south side where the hill drops steeply to the south east and from the cemetery it is a beautiful view to the south east. Most of the barrows only has short grass growing on them and are easily visible.

The cemetery consists of at least 14 round barrows where 6 of them are listed as burial cairns that has been overgrown with grass and eart and not real barrows. The barrows have been built of a mix of earth and larger stones and the difference between barrows or cairns can be difficult. The site also has natural rock outcrops and "bumps" in the terrain that could be cairns.

The largest barrows are around 9-11 metres in diameter and 1-1,5 metres in height. These are oriented closest together in the centre of the cemetery while one larger barrow, 13 metres in diameter is farthest to the north east. The rest of the barrows and cairns are smaller, 6-8 metres in diameter and does not elevate much from the terrain and can be difficult to identify as barrows instead of natural hills. Some of the barrows have the typical craters on top however most of the barrows and cairns doesnt seem to have any damage.

Most of the barrow cemetery was cleared of larger trees (except a few) to make it possible to visit the cemetery and a few picnic table as well as a information poster was placed here.
