Barrow Cemetery in Vestfold

The Fevang cemetery consisted of (according to a written record of 1820) several hundred burials, containing round barrows, square barrows, cairns, circular stone settings, square stone settings, single standing stones and some three pointed stone settings. Over the years a lot of these burials have been lost due to road construction of the nearby road and farming. Today the cemetery consists of 4 large round barrows, 10 round cairns and three stone settings, two circular and one three-pointed and possibly another round stone setting.

The site today is in a beautiful birch forest with very little forest floor vegetation, making the burials easy to find. It has also been converted into a small park with information posters. It is located on a small long hill along a local road.

The largest round barrow is the barrow furthest to the south in the cemetery and also on the highest place. It is 24 metres in diameter and 2,8 metres in height. It has a nice round shape and clear ditches.
The other barrows and cairns range in size from 18 to around 7-8 metres. Some are low but still easy to make out in the low vegetation. Two of the cairns have clear rings of larger stones around the edges. Some of the cairns can be difficult to distinguish from earth barrows because of the moss growth. Only a few of the remaining barrows and cairns seems to have any damage.
The circular stone settings are small, around 2 metres in diameter and consists of stones form 20-30cm wide. They would be very difficult to see if the grass was higher.
Findings from over 77 excavated barrows showed that the oldest burials dated back to the early iron age, around 200-300AD.

To the west of the cemetery it was excavated a small iron age settlement with remains of fields and stone fences.
