Barrow Cemetery in Vestfold
The cemetery at Brunla and Agnes farm is one of the largest and one of the more unusual Iron Age cemeteries from Vestfold. It measures more than 320 x 125 metres, and at the last investigation more than 90 barrows were found. Straight through the cemetery is an ancient road, a sunken or hollow road, also from the same time period.
After clearing a lot of the forest and large trees in and around the cemetery, a lot more barrows have been found and also traces of iron age farming. The work of restoring the cemetery will continue.
The location of the cemetery is unique in the iron age. Usually these cemeteries are found in places with a view so they could be observed by people travelling in and around the ancient settlements. In this case, the cemetery is located between two rocky hillsides. The only view is to the south to the modern Brunla farm. Today the view is blocked by a forest.
When I visited the cemetery, I could count at least 60 large and small barrows. Almost all of them are round in shape, but there are also around 10 elongated barrows. The round barrows range in size from almost 20 metres in diameter and down to only around 3 metres in diameter and from 1.5 to 0.5 metres in height. Some of them have clear ditches around the edges and some have plundering scars in the centre. The barrows are overgrown with almost only short grass and it makes them easy to observe. A lot of leafy trees are scattered around on the cemetery. When anyone visit the site they can walk along the ancient hollow road going through the site, today visible as a footpath.
