Information for this cave, a site of pilgrimage since early medieval times, comes from The Journal of Antiquities - see their entry for The Shrine Of Rocamadour, Perigueux, Midi-Pyrenees, France, which gives directions for finding this cave and background information about St Amadour.
The Journal tells us that St Amadour is the name of a Biblical saint of the 1st century AD, otherwise known as Zacchaeus, who lived the life of a hermit at Rocamadour, bringing with him a famous carving of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and dying in about 70AD. The Journal adds: "the cave (today) contains his relics which were placed here by Benedictine monks in 1166, after they had found his body to be still incorrupt". The statue of the Black Madonna is housed inside The Chappelle Miraculeuse inside the Church of Notre Dame on the hillside above the cave.
More information about Rocadamour can be found at Rocamadour - the Shrine of the Black Madonna, which tells us this is the second most visited French site after Mont Saint-Michel.
