TheCaptain visited on 1st May 2000 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 5 Access: 4 Drive south from Toulouse with the intention of climbing the Pic des Trois Seigneurs, have to stop, too much snow at 2055m. Superb up here. Back via Aulus, Arse, Seix. Strange language spoken out here. On the way down, stop to look at the Dolmen de Sem, also know as Palet de Sanson. A remarkably sited dolmen in the Pyrenees, near to the village of Vicdessos, Ariege, France. Pictures taken 1st May 2000. I discovered this dolmen while driving up the valley on a day trip to climb the Pic des Trois Seigneurs (I failed to get to the top due to the depth of the snow on the final ridge), which may be the mountain in the left background of this picture.

The Palet de Sanson, once known as the Dolmen de Sem, is a remarkably sited stone in the Pyrenees, near to the village of Vicdessos, Ariege, France [Now classed as a 'natural erratic' - see comments below]

I discovered this on my map while driving up the valley on a day trip to climb the Pic des Trois Seigneurs on May Day 2000 (I failed to get to the top due to the depth of the snow on the final ridge), which may be the mountain in the left background of this picture

"The Dolmen de Sem, also know as Palet de Sanson, is a remarkably sited dolmen... I discovered this dolmen while driving ..."

Hope not to be annoying, but it seems strange to me that this stone continues to be referred at as a "dolmen" in your commentaries, even after you accept it's indeed an erratic stone ?
Wouldn't you change this ?
cordially

[amended. thank you. admin] Dear Captain,
I'm awfully sorry, but I have to tell you that the Palet de Samson, also called Dolmen de Sem, is a FALSE DOLMEN...
and a really beautiful erratic stone, here abandoned, once upon a time, by the old pyrenean "glaciers" of Montcalm et Vicdessos.

So I suggest you to change the type of this stone from burial chamber to erratic stone !!!!

regards,
la femme de pierre

Coincidentally I just highlighted the ancient sites in Surrey being passed by the Olympic cycle road races. See below my post 'A good place to watch the Olympic Cycle road races on the Box Hill loop'

Nice aerial shots of the mountain ridge as the camera helicopter flew over, but nothing of the dolmen itself. However, there were some splendid shots of the cave entrance at Niaux to be seen.

I discovered this dolmen while driving up the valley from Tarascon to Vicdessos on a day trip to climb the Pic des Trois Seigneurs on the 1st May 2000. I saw a signpost to a dolmen, and just had to follow them until I found it. And well worth the little side trip it was too.
