Hillfort (well, originally) in Kent. Dover Castle is believed to be on the site of an Iron Age Hillfort. Evidence of Iron age occupation has been found on the site.

More information at Pastscape Monument No. 468006.

The Journal of Antiquities also features an entry for The Roman Lighthouse, Dover, Kent, which adds the "parish church of St Mary-in-Castro, a late Saxon foundation from 1000AD, stands right besides the Pharos but is not attached". The Journal gives background information, includes photographs and reference sources for more information.

Be prepared to be scared this autumn half term as a frighteningly great day out awaits. With over nine ghosts reported to have been seen and heard at Dover Castle, you better keep your wits about you, as spooky characters lead you through one of England's most haunted castles. Beware of the horrible hag! Dare you walk through the tunnel of terror? Enjoy a chillingly fun day out and see if you can unnerve and scare us enough to win a prize for the best children's Halloween costume, bestowed on the most bloodcurdling attire each day.
