Tasburgh Fort
Tasburgh Fort submitted by Dodomad : More than 20 deep holes were dug by nighthawkers Photo Credit: Natalie Butler) (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hillfort in Norfolk. This hillfort is difficult to interpret. It is roughly oval in plan surrounded by earth ramparts. It stands within the village of Upper Tasburgh, and Tasburgh church lies within the fort near its southern side. The best preserved ramparts lie on the northern side where there is still an ancient hedgerow. Excavation has shown that the fort was inhabited in the Middle Saxon Period (650-850 AD) up to 1200 AD.

Note: Illegal nighthawkers' treasure hunting at Tasburgh earthworks leaves it full of holes. More in the comments

Illegal Nighthawkers' treasure hunting at Tasburgh earthworks leave it full of holes by Andy B on Sunday, 14 January 2024
(User Info | Send a Message)
Tasburgh earthworks, 10 miles south of Norwich, is the latest Norfolk location to be targeted by the trinket-seekers who "devastated" the area with more than 20 large holes.

The site - which is managed by the Norfolk Archaeological Trust (NAT) - is home to a defensive fortification that can be traced as far back as the Iron Age, as well as evidence of Saxon settlers.

Natalie Butler, NAT director, said: "It is absolutely devastating - none of our sites have been hit like this before. "On first observation, I counted 22 holes but there is likely more. It looks like they have systematically worked across the whole site."

Excavations by the Norfolk Archaeological Trust have not shown this to be Saxon/Danish enclosure. What they have shown is that the area was used a settlement in the Middle Saxon Period (650-850 AD) up to 1200 AD. It is still thought likely that it was constructed in the Iron Age as a fort. See Norfolk Archaeological Trust Tasburgh.

Excavation has proved that this is a Saxon/Danish enclosure not an iron age fort.
