Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Norfolk

Right beside the A1074, by the Costessey turn, in a brick enclosure sits a rather decorative, if sealed, brick and flint well-house incorporating a low brick arch over a stone trough; above this is a brick obelisk topped with a stone urn. Nothing about this indicates the nature of the monument as a well apart from a substantial iron wheel still mounted on one side, presumably once part of the gear for raising the water. The name is unexplained; although there was supposedly a well in Taverham parish marking one of the spots where the body of local saint Walstan headed on his way to his final resting-place at Bawburgh, it’s not necessarily identical with this site.

Re: Roundwell by Anonymous on Monday, 01 May 2017
The original well on this site was dug between 1780-1790 to supply water to the then built Round House & Roundwell Lodge. French prisoners of war built the monument around 1820, the well was used for water till around the time the Roundwell pub was built 1930s. The water was then said not safe to use after people would throw items into it, it was then blocked off like it stands today .. Paul Cooper, Costessey historian , Costessey Town Council ..
