Aylmerton Cross

Ancient Cross in Norfolk

Precisely on a sharp turn of the parish boundary between the two villages, Aylmerton or Gresham Cross is an early medieval wayside cross, said to be a marker on a pilgrimage route to the shrines of Little Walsingham. Three roads meet here, plus an old track called Mill Lane that was supposed to have been a pilgrim path. In the base is a small niche, believed to have been for votive offerings.

Until the late 19th century it was known as a 'stump cross', as only the base then existed. Then it was heavily restored and a cross placed on top of the new shaft, making it 4.8m tall. It has been restored again since 2002, when it was struck and badly damaged by a lorry, and is now a scheduled monument.

Legend says that a tunnel runs from the cross to the ruins of Beeston Regis priory, and within it is hidden a 'golden calf'. Another version says the tunnel actually runs from Gresham Castle to the priory, but still passes beneath the cross.

In the fields nearby are a few of the surviving 'Shrieking Pits' of Aylmerton, hollows made by early medieval iron working, but once thought to have been prehistoric, and haunted by a woman in white.
