Leakey, the Making of Mankind from 1982 got my mind spinning reading about the two clay Bisons found in the Tuc D'Audoubert, untouched and unseen for 15.000 years. The time was back in the early 80's, but the cave was not open to the public and very difficult to find. But the cave was found and a collappsible canoe brought us in there after the long drive from Norway to the environs of Ste.Croix in the french Pyrénées.

A cave in which two clay bison attributed to the Upper Paleolithic Magdalenian culture were discovered in the early 20th century. The representations are each only two feet long. The bison bull and cow and dozens of other animal figures engraved in the walls are among other artefacts of tools and human foot and hand prints, dating to roughly 14000 BC.

The primary work on the cave and its finds is Le sanctuaire secret des bisons : Il y a 14 000 ans, dans la caverne du Tuc d'Audoubert, by Robert Bégouën, the son and nephew of the original discoverers, Jean Clottes, archaeologist, and other co-authors.
Location Source: OpenStreetMap

Note: Unique photos of this cave from Per, taken in 1983. At the time part of the cave was gated and the cave is now strictly off limits
