Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Kent
The principle supple of water in the Parish came from the ancient Our Lady’s Well. Its is though that Saxon tribes settled around this spring and it remained an important source of water until modern supplies. The spring now arises beneath a slightly derelict 'modern' brick and concrete well house. Its water flows to fill a large wedge shaped pool, and thence underground to the river, feeding a private pond on the way. This first pool, or dipping well, is covered with a vigorous crop of watercress, and surrounded by wooden fences. To the north side of the pool is course of brickwork enclosing it.
To find Our Lady’s Well, take the A28 out of Canterbury towards Sturry, and here take the right hand road to Fordwich. Park near St. Mary’s church and Town Hall, and take the footpath here until one enters the field. Otherwise walk up the High Street, taking the first left, Spring lane, here one comes across the same footpath leading into the field. In this field turn right, and the dip well will be visible within the fence, and the well is enclosed in a private garden above but visible from this field.
