Tumulus (now destroyed) in Essex

This tumulus, now destroyed, is recorded on The Northern Antiquarian entry for Alresford Hill, Alresford, Essex, but still gives a helpful 8 figure grid reference of TM 0628 2022. Their entry records the finding of a well-preserved urn in June 1942by a schoolgirl, Miss Anne Pilkington. TNA tells us it is thanks to her that we have a record of this site at all.

This site is also recorded by Pastscape - see their entry for Monument Number 386364, which adds that the beaker was found 70 yards north west of Bench Mark 74.8and 560 yards slightly west from Alresford Church. "The beaker was found about 5 ft down in the face of a gravel pit. No mound had been observed there but a circular crop mark had been noted. In 1922 Laver had noted a ploughed down barrow some 18 inches high in this field. There can be no doubt about the site which is recognised from his sketch map. It was 200 yds from the road and 20 yds south of the track into the field."
