The museum is housed in the Norman keep of Colchester Castle which is "the largest keep in existence" (Pevsner). It is considerably larger than the White Tower of London, but most of its facing of septaria and ashlar has been stolen revealing the rubble core with very many Roman bricks.

The museum collection is beautifully presented and contains flint tools from the Palaeolithic through to the late Neolithic. One of the "must sees" is the mysterious wooden idol found at Dagenham dating from the Bronze Age. There is a wonderful display of bronze weapons and a smith's hoard showing raw lumps of bronze, broken and cut up axes and palstaves ready to be melted down and recast. Recycling metal is nothing new and the display continues with a dazzling heap of finished axe heads.

The museum is much concerned with the Roman occupation and the Boudiccan revolt that destroyed the veterans' colony and burnt the town. The gruesome display of skulls showing horrific sword cuts is a magnet for schoolchildren. Beneath the keep are the Roman vaults that include an early pagan temple to Claudius.

A visit is highly recommended.

Colchester Castle Museum submitted by Sunny100 : The tombstone of Marcus Favonius Facilis centurion of the 20th legion stands 6 feet high. He was stationed in Britain at the time of the occupation 43 CE and probably died just before 60 CE at Colchester. It is made of Bath stone and is said to be one of the finest tombstones from Roman Britain. (Vote or comment on this photo)

The Hazelton Collection of flint tools and artefacts on show at Colchester Castle by Andy B on Sunday, 13 March 2011
(User Info | Send a Message)
When Dovercourt Boat owning brothers Gordon and Eric Hazelton,
both engine drivers, began combing the shoreline, little
did they dream they would amass what was to be described as “Probably
the finest collection of flint tools and artefacts discovered in Essex.”

Documenting their finds with photographs and drawings, they made a
unique, detailed record which they always intended would be passed on to
Colchester Castle museum.

Three years ago, Eric handed over the collection and museum staff were
amazed as the hundreds of artefacts appeared. Now, 13 years after
Gordon’s death and two years after Eric’s, a part of their collection
along with their written records and photographs has gone on display
inside the entrance of Colchester Castle.

As their nephew, Miles Dumble says, “When Dr. Paul Sealey, showed my
mother Elva, father and myself around, we all felt that Eric and Gordon,
both wonderful men, would be well pleased that some of the Hazelton
Collection is on display.”
