Natural Stone in Essex. I spotted a large stone, a pudding stone erratic, a few yards down a path towards the entrance to The Priory.

It is in an earth bed, on your right hand side as you head towards the priory, shortly before the security gates and half hidden by a rhododendron bush. All this is more or less opposite The Carved Angel pub in Earl's Colne, Essex.

The stone is of similar composition to the better known stones at Alphamstone, which I guess is about 10 miles away. It has deep but narrow holes in it, like some of the stones at Alphamstone, which like at alphamstone provoke thoughts as to what extent these holes are natural and to what extent made by water.

The stone as exposed was about 18 inches tall, by 18 inches wide by a foot at it's widest, irregular in shape. All these measurments are approx and only record the bits of the stone above ground.

Like the stones at Alphamstone, I saw could see no other similar stones locally and like at Alphamstone, this stone is now closely associated Geographically to a Christian site.

Hi Andy B
I'm currently trying to catalogue all known puddingstones throughout four counties, and besides those on Rudge's supposed 'Puddingstone Track' I now have over 200, so I'm keen to know whether or not to include this one at Earl's Colne.

You describe this as a puddingstone, but say it is of similar composition to those at Alphamstone. Since those are in fact sarsens, and I've never encountered "deep and narrow holes" in any puddingstone, I was wondering if you could cast your mind back to this entry from many years ago and confirm the nature of this particular boulder for me. I suppose it could be one of those 'transitional' types which is mostly sarsen with perhaps a vein of pebbles in it? Unfortunately I'm never likely to be able to get there to check it for myself.

Cheers,
willowman1 (Mike Burgess)

Hello Mike, I'm not sure why this listing has got my name against it as it's not one I've visited. I can't offhand remember who actually contributed this site, perhaps that someone is reading this? We're happy to help with your enquries.
    Thanks,
    Andy

      Hi Andy,
OK many thanks anyway. I shall wait to see if there's any further response.
      Cheers,

I was brought up in Tilty Essex and there was a pudding stone next to the porch of the Church door. last time I visited some idiot vandal had moved it and put a flower pot their. No kidding it had magical powers. I am a scientist but I know about quantum physics but on a level I don't want to explain too much it was a special stone. I think it should be put back in its original place. I am sur eit is the reason Tilty church and Tilty Abbey are where they are. julia Wermig-Morgan
