Cockley Cley Iceni Village
Cockley Cley Iceni Village submitted by GDFreeman : How bad can it get? A roundhouse with TWO doorways. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Was a somewhat shambolic reconstruction of village of Iceni tribe. The 'Iceni village' was demolished in early 2014, so no longer exists. It was replaced for a while by an 'Iceni Centre' (which was basically just a farm museum), but that was closed down later that same year.

Re: Cockley Cley Iceni Village by Anonymous on Tuesday, 16 January 2024
We visited the museum many years ago.
There was a very large skeleton in a glass case about 7ft long.
There is now no mention of this skeleton in anything that is posted about Cockley Clay.
I wonder why?

I think it needs to be made clear on this page that the 'Iceni village', as fake as it was, was actually demolished in early 2014, so no longer exists. It was replaced for a while by an 'Iceni Centre' (which was basically just a farm museum), but that was closed down later the same year.

Recently rebranded and still a disgrace. Other than a coat of paint in the ticket office, the major change is that the village section has been removed, leaving the tatty farm museum and barren nature trail. Admission is still £6 per adult.

I visited this site a few weeks ago and it is a sham that it is so inacurate, everything about it is wrong, if you really want to visit a true reconstruction of a celtic village then Butser Hill outside Portsmouth is the one for you.

However, the riuned church is lovely and well worth a look around, a lovely example of a 12th century Norman church and NOT a 7th century Saon church as advertised.

The place is quirky and just has to be seen to be believed, a bit of fun, but not an acurate tool for educational purposes.

Re: Cockley Cley Iceni Village by Anonymous on Monday, 31 October 2011
There are a fair number of decent iron age reconstructions around. They all generally agree on how the roof works and the best guess at the walls seems to be wattle and daub. Makes sense to me, an awful lot easier than trying to make planks by hand. All seem to agree there was no central post, but there was a central fire - and I can't imagine anyone building something like this with two doorways. Don't waste your time here if you're genuinely interested in the archaeology. The church is interesting though. If the account of its uncovering is true it may be what it purports to be, i.e. pre Norman. Worth a look to make your own mind up. Farm museum shambolic, but you might find the odd interesting thing in it.

Re: Cockley Cley Iceni Village by Anonymous on Sunday, 16 October 2011
Truly awful, this place should be closed down, a completely inaccurate rippoff, we visited the church only to be greeted by a bees/wasps nest, i confronted the lady at the entrance who told me that the bees/wasps are there every october and she thinks they are harmless?????? Unbelievable, i will lodge a complaint to the council about this, what happened to health and safety?? A BEES NEST!!!! She claimed they are masonry bees and she thinks they dont sting, does she not realize that bee stings can kill people with allergic reactions??? Truly awful place, avoid like the plague!

Re: Cockley Cley Iceni Village by Anonymous on Thursday, 02 June 2011
We enjoyed the church and cottage and even sort of enjoyed the Iceni village, seeing it for 1970s kitsch. However, on touring the farm museum, I was genuinely spooked to find a decomposing skeleton hanging from the barn rafters. No explanation. Left pretty quickly after that. Does anyone have an explanation?

Re: Cockley Cley Iceni Village by Anonymous on Friday, 20 August 2010
I agree with all the comments above comments, the Iceni Village was pretty poor.

The farm museum is looking pretty tired, but not without interest if you like implements, carriages etc.

The cottage and church are however worth the visit, just a shame you have to buy a ticket to the whole site.

Shame that the Peat Moors centre closed. Why do the rubbish attractions stay open and the decent ones close down.

The 'Icini Village' is a small add-on to a farm museum.

I visited it 20 years ago, not long after it opened, and was appalled by the sheep hurdles and plastic string, and snake pit!

I returned this year, August 2009, to find that it has not improved.

There has been no effort, in spite of lots of examples around the country to copy from, to attempt a half decent reconstruction.
Everything from the 'cornstore' (on the ground) to the nails and screws holding the building together, smacks of no research of any kind.

If you are a school looking for somewhere to do 'The Celts' please avoid this site.

Photos will be uploaded for you to see how poor this site is.

Re: ley Cley Iceni Village by Anonymous on Sunday, 23 August 2009
You have to be interested in the Iceni to visit this place, This Iceni village is a portal into how life was for Brittons befor the Romans invaded us. The Iceni were the only people in the world to kick the crap out of the Romans, although they eventualy got beat, and that was the beginning of the end for the Romans. You have to remember we were only ordinary people minding our buisness and then a highly trained fighting machine came over to Britton. I think one of the reasons that not to many people know about the Iceni is the Romans wrote there own history books. If you are interested, this village is the only reconstruction you will find, go and have a look I did and I will probably go again!

THOROUGHLY DISREPUTABLE, AGREE WITH ALL ABOVE COMMENTS, EVEN HAD A SNAKE PIT WHEN I LAST VISITED! RAMPANT SENSATIONALISM AT THE COST OF THE FAR MORE STIMULATING FACTS WE DO HAVE CONCERNING THE LATER 1ST MILLIENIUM BC IN NORFOLK

This really is very poor indeed. The Iceni village is a joke, the nature trail is about the only place in the area that doesn't have any nature, and worst of all they have a 12th century church that they claim was built in 628, making it slightly before the Christian mission arrived in East Anglia. Best avoided.

Re: Cockley Cley Iceni Village by Anonymous on Friday, 15 August 2003
This is a real rip-off of a tourist "attraction". I would not recommend anyone to go there: the reconstructed village is made from plywood and is populated with dummies (ex Burtons the tailors?) wearing old curtain material. The place should be closed down.
